How long does garden furniture really last.

Because of the huge garden furniture range of over 30 designs available in different

sizes and timbers you can be assured we have a garden bench to suit your

location and budget.

We use a wide variety of hardwood and softwood timbers including teak wood, iroko wood, albizzia wood,

mahogany hardwood, pine softwood, karri, weave and stainless steel.

All Alexander Rose

timbers can be left to weather down to a silvery grey colour or

alternatively you can treat them to maintain the natural characteristics.

The colour and durability vary from light yellow to deep brown, through

pinky red and green and lifespans of between 10 and 25 years.

Timber Colour Durability-How long it should last!

Teak Light Brown timber lasts around 25 years+

Albizzia Brown timber around 25 years

Iroko Yellow timber around 20 years

Mahogany Pink timber around 12 years

Karri Red timber around 10 years

Pine Green timber around 10 years

Weave Bronze timber around 12 years

Stainless Steel timber around 25 years+

Garden furniture weathering process

As part of the natural weathering process, splits and cracks will appear in the wood, mostly on

the end grain, and less to the straight grain on the surface, within a few weeks.

As with other close grain hardwoods such as oak, this is the normal behaviour of timber.

Our furniture is designed with this in mind and its durability and strength will remain unaffected.

With changing weather conditions, cracking will appear and disappear. The drier the wood, the more

cracks will appear.

As natural oils and minerals in the wood evaporate due to exposure to the elements, the appearance

of hardwood furniture can vary widely.

It may be left to turn a soft, silvery grey, and cleaned occasionally with soapy water. Or alternatively

treated with Alexander Rose specially formulated care products to preserve a beautiful rich finish

and enhance the look of the wood.

These products will not eliminate splits and end grain cracks (which are to be expected and will not

affect the strength and structure of the furniture) but will keep them to a minimum.

History of Lloyd Loom.

The ledgendary Lloyd Loom process was invented in 1917 by the American Marshall B lloyd, who twisted kraft paper round metal wire, placed the paper threads on a loom and wove them into what was to become the traditional Lloyd Loom fabric. Lloyd Loom chairs quickly became very popular in America and in 1921 the patent was osld to an English manufacturer, which used Lloyd Loom in an original manner to create a collection of typical English furniture.

Lloyd Loom furniture could be found in hotels, restaurants and tea rooms, as well as aboard zeppelins and cruise liners. When the factory in England was bombed at the end of the Second World War, the production of Lloyd Loom chairs came to a halt in Europe.

To make the chairs resistant to damp, they are first dipped in a bath of latex. This protective layer is then baked on in a kiln. Finally the chairs are given a finishing coat of moisture- resistant lacquer in the colour of the customers choice. The hand welded aluminium frames make these outdoor chairs particularly sturdy and ultra lightweight, which also means they are extremely easy to handle. They will stand up to anything the weather and wind can throw at them during the summer months. To enable you extend the life of your garden furniture for as long as possible, we recommend that you bring the chairs indoors during the cold, damp winter months.
